A photograph showing a man sitting on the edge of the rooftop structure of the Q2 residential block at Tigné Point has renewed concerns about security and antisocial behaviour in one of Malta’s most exclusive residential developments.
The image, taken from a distance, shows an individual perched on the edge of a cantilevered rooftop section several storeys above ground, while two other people stand nearby on the roof terrace.
Following questions from The Shift, MIDI plc said the Q2 block is privately owned by its residents and that responsibility for security within the building rests with them.
However, a MIDI spokesperson said there has been a growing problem of antisocial behaviour throughout the wider Tigné Point area.
“Over the last year, there has been a noticeable increase in antisocial behaviour at Tigné Point. In particular, vandalism and disturbance causing distress to the residents,” the spokesperson said.
The company also criticised authorities for failing to assume responsibility for public areas within the development.
“Unfortunately, despite the contractual provisions, the authorities have failed to take over control of the public areas despite numerous requests. This extends to the lack of security of the public areas by the public enforcement agencies,” the spokesperson added.
Developed by MIDI plc on the former military peninsula at Tigné Point, the project transformed the area into a mixed-use development comprising luxury residences, public open spaces, retail outlets and waterfront promenades. The development includes several high-end residential blocks overlooking Marsamxett Harbour and Valletta, with apartments among the most expensive on the Maltese property market.
Questions over responsibility for public spaces at Tigné Point have surfaced repeatedly over the years, particularly as residents and businesses have raised concerns about vandalism, trespassing and disturbances in the area.
It remains unclear whether the individuals seen on the Q2 rooftop were residents or had authorised access to the building
