Caruana Galizia memorial cleared and blocked by barriers

The makeshift memorial in Valletta for slain journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia has been cleared once again.

The monument opposite the law courts in the capital has been cordoned off ahead of the wreath-laying ceremony for Saturday’s Victory Day at the Great Siege monument.

The memorial was cleared to make way for chairs and a red carpet for a wreath-laying ceremony

The wreath-laying ceremony will be taking place on Thursday evening at 7.30pm. The Deputy Prime Minister and the Opposition leader will be attending the event.

The move has provoked a number of reactions, with Caruana Galizia’s sister Mandy Mallia asking “What are they afraid of? Facing posters asking #WhoKilledDaphne?”

Meanwhile, Il-Kenniesa vowed to defy the orders and in Facebook post called on people to “Help us rebuild it and we will do so each day if we have to. Onwards to justice.”

The makeshift memorial to Caruana Galizia has been vandalised and cleared of flowers and tributes countless times only for activists and citizens to replace the flowers and candles each time these are removed.

Labour figures, including MPs, have repeatedly called for the removal of the memorial set up and maintained by citizens before the law courts as a reminder that justice has not been served.
