Campaign calls for public support to end overfishing ahead of EU meeting

As EU Ministers meet on Monday to discuss fishing limits, international non governmental organisation Our Fish is calling on citizens to send emails to Fisheries Commissioner Karmenu Vella to respect scientific advice to end overfishing.

A satirical video accompanying the campaign criticises Vella’s role in overfishing. The organisation said that scientists and experts have been clear on fishing limits that should be adhered to in order to avoid irreversible damage to the oceans.

Fishing limits are essential to ensure stocks than can reproduce for the coming years. This advice can no longer ignored, Our Fish said.

“Our greed today could mean devastation in the future, not just for the environment, but also for communities that rely on fish for their food and livelihoods. Our politicians have already made commitments to end overfishing by 2020, but as crazy as it might seem, they are currently ignoring their own promises by continuing to set fishing limits dangerously high,” the organisation said.

The organisation is asking people to send an email to Commissioner Vella to put an end to overfishing this December:

“Ministers are under a lot of industry pressure to keep ignoring the scientific evidence, so we desperately need your help to encourage them to save our fish and end overfishing”.
