Daphne Caruana Galizia remembered on her birthday

Messages of love, support and sadness at the killing of journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia were handwritten and sent from different countries around the world in bespoke birthday cards organised by activist group Il-Kenniesa and uploaded on social media. The cards will also be placed at her memorial in Valletta during an event at 8pm on Sunday to mark her birthday.

The cards were designed by Aldo Gatt and include a short quote from Daphne – “It’s true that life is unfair and that much of it can’t be helped, but where I can do anything to avoid unfairness or to set it straight, then I will”.

They have been signed by people from London, US, Brussels, Leipzig, Florence and Paris among others. Frederik Obermaier, one of the two journalists behind the Panama Papers, wrote a card out to Daphne.

Il-Kenniesa spokesperson Tina Urso said they wanted to send a message to society about the importance of coming together and keeping Daphne’s memory alive.

“We also want to send a message to people on the importance of coming together not only to remember Daphne on days like today, but also having faith and putting your trust in civil society. We feel empowered to fight against injustice and want to spread that empowerment to others. It’s only together that we will obtain accountability, transparency and justice,” she said.

During the ceremony, a short film – produced by the Committee to Protect Journalists – will be shown.
