Anna Anastasi

Embarking on her artistic journey about a decade ago with a humble beginner’s art set gifted to her for Christmas, Anna Anastasi (re)discovered a profound passion for the world of art. Acrylic paint quickly became her favoured medium, allowing her to weave vivid and bold colours into a slightly quirky style that emphasizes reflections. Anna’s artistic technique mirrors her eclectic personality, where she embraces imperfections as a form of beauty, and her paintings are a hotchpotch of ideas she gets from her travels, with most depicting the sea.

James Vella Clark

James Vella Clark is one of Malta’s main expressionist interpreters of the Maltese urban and rural landscape. Since his first exhibition in 2001, his works have gradually gained a more abstract dimension. These eventually became part of a natural process that led to his current abstract work. Today, the artist’s main idiom is abstraction, which lends mainly to the abstract expressionist movement of the 50’s and 60’s. If we could speak of a movement or school of expressionism in Malta, James Vella Clark would definitely belong to it. Besides a number of solo exhibitions in Malta, James Vella Clark has held personal exhibitions in Germany, The Netherlands, Belgium, Australia and New York. Over the years, he was also invited to participate in collective exhibitions in Barcelona, Florence, Brussels, Duisburg, Vienna, and London.

Catherine Cavallo

Catherine Cavallo is a well-known contemporary painter who lives and works in Malta. An accomplished and fully trained artist, Catherine earned a 1st Class Honours diploma from The City and Guilds of London School of Art, finding inspiration both in the UK, where she honed her figurative work, and then in Italy where her love for landscape painting was born, before returning to her home in Malta. She was also the recipient of various awards and accolades. Her work is rooted in observations of the every day and inspired by the pockets of serenity she looks for amid the upheavals that life presents. Her love of depicting life is evident in her land and seascapes, powerful subjects and evocative figurative compositions. The figurative works are the results of observing people, both superficially and in great depth. Her ideas are mainly influenced by life in Malta but also inspired by current world situations. These figurative works are time-consuming and demanding, so she intersperses them with scapes and works in mixed medium. Her preferred method is working with oils, applied with the palette knife. The last few years have seen the artist’s work spill over into the abstract, exploring the merging of the abstract and the figurative.

Marisa Attard

Marisa Attard is an artist and illustrator who studied art under Esprit Barthet, Harry Alden and Anton Calleja. She has illustrated numerous books and has been awarded the Premju Nazzjonali tal-Ktieb for Best Illustrator of Children’s books, twice. Marisa is a keen observer of people and her range of subjects can be both serious and dark, or humorous, quirky and endearing. Through her art, she expresses her views on how she sees people, society and politics – the good, the bad and the ugly. Her social commentary can be subtle or hidden, but often, it is sharp and bold. She discovered the freedom of combining her illustrative style of pen, ink and watercolour to works in acrylic and collage which show her preference for bright colours applied in layers with added collage and found objects to help create texture and depth.

John Busuttil Leaver

John Busuttil Leaver is a Maltese visual artist and painter. He worked for many years in book design. He is philosophical about his artistic work and sees what he does as non-commercial: a statement about the contemporary. He points the finger at abusive construction by evidencing what remains of the countryside and heritage. In his solo show ‘A Diary of Obsessions’, (2008, Saint James Cavalier Centre for Creativity, Valletta) he was one of the earliest to display work which commented against overdevelopment. Recent work focuses on traditional oil painting as a counter to the “anything goes” attitude of commercial culture. The “how” has meaning as well as the “why”. Busuttil Leaver studied at the Malta Government School of Art under Harry Alden, and later at The Art and Design Centre, Valletta. He began working as a graphic designer but continued to paint and participate in many collectives. The National Museum of Fine Arts gave him a one-man showing in 1997. Other one-man shows followed in various galleries and art venues. In 2014, he exhibited work in London. A number of art critics and curators have covered his work, including Nicholas de Piro, Michael J. Schiavone, Emanuel Fiorentino, Dominic Cutajar, Dennis Vella, Adrian Stivala, Raphael Vella and Dr Louis Lagana. He won a number of art competitions and was featured in radio and TV programmes most noteworthy of which was a Canadian TV Cultural programme, ‘TV Frames’, during their feature on Malta.
